Abstract

A study was carried out on the changing performance of a packed bed for sensible compressed air energy storage(CAES)system. The effects of solid phase material, filling approach, inlet pressure and porosity on charging performance were investigated. The results showed that the thermal efficiency of the tank filled with steel is maximum. The thermal efficiency increases with an increase of the inlet pressure, and when the inlet pressure reaches to a certain value the pressure has little impact on the thermal efficiency, but heat storage time increases. The changing efficiency of the tank filled with three types of material with different physical properties is higher than that of the normal tank filled single rock or steatite.
