Abstract
The sustainable and steady development of bio-fuels, including biodiesel and bio-oils, must secure stable and high quality raw materials, while microalgae is one of them. In this paper, the concept of microalgae was introduced and the research and development about the production of biodiesel and bio-oils in the world were reviewed. The emphasis was put on the progress on the synthesis of microalgae by genetic engineering, new reactor and coupling process, as well as the production of bio-oil from pyrolysis of microalgae and direct usage of microalgae as fuel. Finally, the advantages and problems in making bio-fuel from microalgae were discussed.
