A photothermal and pH-responsive intelligent PSBG nanofiller for enhancing the barrier and self-healing performance of the SMP coatings

Abstract

In this work, a protective smart coating with excellent light-thermal and pH dual-responsive can furnish excellent corrosion protection for aluminum alloys is prepared. This kind of composite coating incorporates a shape memory polymer (SMP) embedded with core-shell PDA/SiO2/BTA/GQDs (PSBG) nanofillers. The intelligent PSBG fillers agent are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly method, polydopamine-core (PDA-core) can achieve superior photothermal conversion ability, hollow SiO2 on PDA can carry a lot of BTA corrosion inhibitors, while graphene quantum dots (GQDs) cap acting as gatekeepers can regulate benzotriazole (BTA) leakage from hollow PDA/SiO2 nanocontainers. In this instance, on the one hand, PSBG nanofillers can sense and heal micro corrosion region, on the other hand, the outstanding light-thermal conversion effect of PSBG can enhance the coating temperature to awaken the barrier recovery effect as well as can trigger the release of carried inhibitors to quickly repress the corrosive redox reaction. To assess the self-healing capabilities of the composite coatings, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and surface morphology studies are used. According to the aforementioned findings, PSBG-based coatings possess a greater levels of corrosion resistance and an outstanding active protection capabilities than blank SMP. All in all, our research of pH-responsive and light-thermal double-triggered intelligent coating systems is successfully synthesized, and the findings supported the use of coatings based on nanofillers in the hopes of improving the life of corrosion protection.
