Analysis on flange joints with NiTi gasket under bending using FEM

Abstract

Flange joints with NiTi shape memory alloy gasket were studied using finite element analysis (ABAQUS), and the conclusions were compared with those flange joints with spiral-wound gasket or aluminum gasket. The results show that stresses distribution of flanges and bolts are affected little by NiTi gasket, while stress level is higher than those joints with other two kinds of gaskets. The angle of flange rotation with NiTi gasket is much lower than the requirement of 0.3° in ASME code and slightly larger than other two. Gasket contact stress uniformity of NiTi is better than other two. Maximum contact stress of NiTi gasket is smaller than aluminum gasket but larger than spiral-wound gasket.
