Abstract

UV transmittance of ethylene glycol (EG) synthesized by homogeneous catalytic hydration of ethylene oxide was studied. The effect of the presence of NY catalyst and rectification temperature of catalyst containing EG was investigated. The presence of catalyst accelerated EG oxidation with air and thus caused the lowering of EG UV transmittance. When the fractionator bottom temperature was controlled < 153°C, the UV transmittance of EG could reach a higher international standard value. The fractionator bottom temperature of homogeneous catalytic hydration process should be kept lower than the alternative process without catalyst.
