Abstract

Superabsorbent was prepared by graft co-polymerization using acrylic acid onto corn starch. The molecular structure was characterized by means of FTIR, XRD, TGA methods. The effects of different kinds of oxidation reduction initiators such as H2O2, K2S2O8- Na2S2O3, Mn3+ and Ce4+ on absorbencies of de-ionized water and running water for copolymer were studied in details. The copolymer prepared by corn starch and acrylic acid using K2S2O8- Na2S2O3 as initiator, can absorb de-ionized water nearly to 1000 g/g. In addition, using Ce4+ as initiator, the copolymer can absorb de-ionized water about 600 g/g.
