Abstract
Uniform zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were synthesized then dispersed into a rubbery polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to prepare ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membranes. The performance of the ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membrane was evaluated in ethanol-water and aromatic-water model systems. The ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membranes, loaded with 6 wt% of the nanoparticles, separated of ethanol and the characteristic compounds in blackberry juice, linalool, benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate more effectively than a pure PDMS membrane. Based on these results, a ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membrane was used to separate the volatile aromatic compounds (VACs) from natural blackberry juice. The total volatile aromatic compounds in the blackberry juice decreased significantly after pervaporation treatment. The recovery of linalool, benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate at 50 °C were 93.8%, 92.1% and 75.2%, confirming the high performance of ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membrane.
