Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book summarizes the recent progress of two-dimensional (2D)-material-based membranes for molecular separation, focusing on membrane preparation, characterization, and application. It introduces the fabrication methods for 2D materials and membranes. The book presents the development of porous graphene-based nanosheet membranes. It describes the design and application of graphene-based membranes for water separation, ions separation, and pervaporation, respectively. The book shows the development of 2D-material membranes for gas separation. It also introduces the advance in 2D-layered double hydroxide membranes. The book demonstrates the design of metal carbides and nitrides, and other emerging 2D-material membranes. It also summarizes the milestones for 2D-material mixed-matrix membranes. The book provides the transport mechanism of 2D-material membranes.
