Abstract

The application of the performance-based seismic design of tall buildings beyond the code-specification was investigated by applying the method into the design of the North tower of the Sunning Plaza in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. In addition, the method can change the seismic design from one macroscopical goal into specific multi objectives. Performance levels and performance goals of tall buildings beyond the code-specification under different earthquake intensities were established. The standard model of North tower was created and analyzed using PERFORM-3D. The analysis result was the used to determine if the performance goal was achieved. The result shows that the response of North tower can meet the requirement of the code for seismic design buildings of China and the performance goal. The application of the performance-based design method is a beneficial reference for the seismic design of tall buildings beyond the code-specification.
