Abstract

Chloroacetylated polystyrene has been prepared by Friedel-Crafts acetylation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer (PS) with chloroacetyl chloride. In this method, carcinogenic compound (chloromethyl ether etc.) was avoided and the reactions of secondary cross-link and multi-substitute could be eliminated. In this report the effects of catalyst, acylating agent, reaction time, PS macrosphere diameter, and the amount of solvent were studied. The results show that the maximum loading of the chloracetylated PS could be up to 4.6 mmol/g and the certain loading, when it is below the maximum loading, of chloracetylated PS can be controlled. The chloroacetylated polystyrene could be applied to many fields, such as flexible immobilization of enzyme, ion exchange and adsorption, solid synthesis supporter etc.
