Abstract
In this paper, the pretreatment of PTA wastewater by catalytic oxidation of activated carbon was investigated. The experimental results showed that the best treatment result was obtained under the oxidation condition of 16g activated carbon/L, aerating 2 hours and pH = 4, the COD removal rate exceeded 64% and activated carbon could be regenerated by caustic soda for reuse. Also, chromatographic analysis data showed that terephthalic acid, benzoic acid and p-toluic acid were degraded after oxidation treatment in different degrees, respectfully, terephthalic acid was partially and selectively oxidized to benzoic acid, and the biodegradability of PTA wastewater had been greatly improved. The costing illuminated that the activated carbon catalytic oxidation process was an efficient pretreatment method for PTA wastewater.
