Abstract

Featuring with excellent flexibility, good thermal stability, low cost, and ease of use, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is considered as a kind of promising membrane materials. PDMS has been developed as gutter layer, selective layer, and protective layer for molecular separation, especially gas separation, with remarkable separation performance. This review aims to present a comprehensive overview of considerations associated with PDMS membranes for gas separation. Special attention will be given to the multifunctional roles of PDMS in composite membranes as gutter layer, selective layer, and protective layer. The design strategies for PDMS membranes, along with the latest advances of structural regulation are critically reviewed. Subsequently, various gas separation applications are discussed. Finally, we will provide a perspective on the opportunities and major challenges for PDMS membranes as different role towards gas separation.
