Abstract

The principle and characteristics of bioelectrochemical system (BES) are summarized systematically in this paper. Research progress of treatment methods for organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorous and heavy metal in water, and degradation of organic matter in solid waste is introduced, respectively. The existing problems and limiting factors of BES for treating contaminants are discussed. The possible approaches and goal for environment remediation are proposed as well.
