Abstract

Biodiesel has attracted a lot of attentions due to its environmental friendly and renewable characteristics. However, the immiscibility of oil with methanol leads to low transesterification rate in the biodiesel production. For this purpose, some kinds of novel reactors and process intensification technologies have been studied and used in the preparation of biodiesel. In this paper, the recent progress in the applications of novel reactors such as membrane reactor, micro-reactor, etc. and process intensification technologies such as microwave, ultrasound, etc. to enhance heat exchange and mass transports in the biodiesel production were reviewed.
