Abstract

The Y-TZP toughness was studied by an indentation method and the K1c value was calculated using different indentation equations. Observations by optical microscopy show that all the indentation cracks were Palmqvist cracks. The toughness values calculated using the indentation equations reported by the literature do not agree with those measured by the SENB method, so a new formula is proposed on the basis of the experimental results.
