Abstract

A lab-scale UASB reactor is employed to carry out the methanogenesis and denitrification of sewage simulaneously. The rule of start-up and running of the reactor and the effect of toxicity action of methanogens with the addition of NO3--N are investigated. The utilization of carbon source by denitrifying bacteria is also studied. The removal efficiency of COD and NO3--N reaches 87% and 99%, respectively, under the following conditions: 20-25℃ of the temperature, 300 mg/L and 50 mg/L of the concentration of COD and NO3--N, respectively, 5 hours of the HRT, 1.92 kg(COD)/m3·d and 0.42 kg(NO3--N)/m3·d of the OLR and the nitrogen loads, respectively. The results provide the possibility to establish simultaneous methanogenesis and denitrification in UASB reactor to treat sewage wastewater. In this case methanogenesis is unaffected by denitrification and methane formation takes place during the whole time.
