Abstract

Severe cracking of a glycol evaporator made of 304 stainless steel appeared after putting into use for a short time. The cracks were observed by optical microcope , the fracture surface of failed parts was examinated by scanning electron microscope(SEM), the chemical composition of parent metal, welds, corroded grain boundaries and corrosion products were analyzed. The metallographic replica was used in the field. The results show that the equipment was severely sensitized during welding. Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) was induced and made the failure of equipment under some circumstances.
