Carbon-supported Pd-Co alloy electrocatalysts for methanol tolerant oxygen reduction

摘要

Carbon-supported Pd-Co bimetallic nanoparticle electrocatalysts of different Pd/Co atomic ratios were prepared by a modified polyol reduction. An activity comparison of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Pd-Co alloy catalysts with the same Pd loading, the same fee disordered structure and a similar particle size has been made. Both composition and structure of Pd-Co alloys have a significant influence on the ORR. The change in the ORR activity with different Pd/Co compositions is correlated to their structural parameter. The maximum ORR activity for Pd2Co/C catalyst heattreated at 500 °C is attributed to an optimal alloy composition and to a favorable Pd-Pd mean interatomic distance caused by alloy formation. Moreover, the Pd-Co alloy catalyst exhibited much higher ORR activity man the Pt/C catalyst in the presence of methanol, thus it may function as a methanol-tolerant ORR catalyst in a direct methanol fuel cell.
