Gas sensors

This book chapter focuses on the recent development of polymers in the detection and quantification of gas species. The chapter begins with an introduction to the sensing mechanisms based on three different transduction modes, including fluorescence, colorimetric, and conductive sensing. After an analysis of the different sensing mechanisms, the design principles of materials and devices and the related application status are introduced, followed by a description of various fabrication methods for gas sensing devices. Afterward, by considering the gap between fundamental research and practical applications, a discussion focused on improving selectivity and exploring novel polymer materials is provided. Finally, future challenges and perspectives in this research field are presented and discussed.
