High-resolution visualization of level 3 details for latent fingerprints with color-tunable BODIPY dyes

摘要

Latent fingerprints (LFPs) detection plays a crucial role in criminal investigations, particularly for suspect identification. In this study, we designed and synthesized four Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes (BDP-G, BDP-Y, BDP-O, BDP-R), which demonstrate over 50 % absolute fluorescence quantum yield and good lipophilicity, facilitating efficient detection of LFPs. Under low-concentration conditions (10 μM), the detection solution can efficiently and conveniently detect LFPs on various substrates (tinfoil, coins, glass, cardboard, desktops, steel) within 10 s using the spraying method. The detection solution exhibits excellent stability, allowing storage for up to 30 days. Color modulation from green to red was achieved through the incorporation of various electron-donating groups via Knoevenagel condensation reactions. This modulation effectively addresses complex background colors, ensuring optimal detection of LFPs against diverse color backgrounds. These advancements significantly enhance investigators' efficiency and substantially improve the success rate of case resolutions.
