N2 - Se4N2, which, apart from the highly explosive Se4N4, is the only binary selenium nitride, is stable to 80°C and therefore of preparative interest. Se4N2 can be obtained according to Equation (a) as a finely crystalline, black powder in nearly quantitative yield. On exposure to moist air, it is slowly hydrolyzed to red Se8 and NH4HSeO3.
