N2 - As defined by the World Health Organization volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are various organic compounds of boiling point from 50°C to 260°C at room temperature. Most of them have uncomfortable special smell, and have toxicity, irritant, teratogenic and carcinogenic effects. VOCs such as benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde can pose great harm to human health. They are not only important precursors to urban gray haze and photochemical smog but also major indoor pollutants, so VOCs may pose health risks to human. Various removal methods have been developed and validated. In this chapter, traditional functional materials for VOC removal via adsorption, catalytic degradation, and other methods are summarized. The traditional functional materials used in adsorption and catalytic oxidation are outlined in terms of material preparation, mechanism of action, catalysis or adsorption properties and other aspects. In addition, other functional materials are covered briefly.
