Abstract

The mechanical properties before and after light ageing of the polypropylene (PP) filled with mica were compared. The ultraviolet-visible(UV) spectrophotometer and scanning electron microscope, etc., were used to investigate the composite. The results demonstrate that the mica flakes with high diameter/thickness ratio are apt to orientating in parallel along flowing direction of the PP melt. The oriented mica flakes not only benefit improving the mechanical properties the composite, but also provide the functions of interlamellar reflection, interference and shield to ultraviolet. The mechanical properties and ultraviolet resistance of the composite can be remarkably raised by decreasing dimension and increasing the diameter/thickness ratio of the mica flakes.
