Abstract
Objective: To isolate and cultivate arsenic-oxidizing strains in nature. Methods: After using concentration and plates serial dilution methods, we optimized the cultivating conditions. Results: Two strains were isolated from active sludge that could oxidize the arsenite. The tolerance of strains to As3+ was higher than that of As3+. They could grow in medium containing 500 mg/L and 1 200 mg/L arsenate respectively. The optimal temperature and pH were determined to be 20°C (for strain1), 30°C (for strain2) and 6.0 (for both acidity) respectively. Conclusions: We have found two arsenic-oxidizing strains in nature, but how to improve the oxidation rate needs further investigation.
