Abstract

The effects of dimer acid on the properties of nylon-66 are studied, and the copolymers are characterized. The addition of a small amount of dimer acid into nylon-66 can decrease its density, melting point, and water absorption, and greatly increase the flexibility and Izod notched impact strength, but a large amount of dimer acid will decrease the toughening ability for copolymers. Dimer acid can reduce the content of α and β crystal phases and improve their dispersion, and suppress the activity of amide groups. Those are good for the increase of thermal degradation temperature and the thermal stability of copolymers.
