Abstract
The influence of diluent contents, kinds of reactants (black carbon or graphite), particle size of metal reductants and carbon content in mixture ratio on speed, temperature and phase composition of the combustion reaction during the process of self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) of WC-Al2O3 compound ceramic materials was studied. The results show that the formation and vaporization of gaseous phase products during the SHS are the important factors influencing reaction parameters and the phase composition of the synthetical product. By changing the reactant mixture ratio, the relative content of the products WC, W2C and W can be effectively adjusted.
