Abstract

Thermal processing, such as melting, sintering and calcination, is well established for the treatment of fly ash. But since high contents of heavy metals in the fly ash may cause secondary pollution, the use of thermal technology for the treatment of fly ash is limited without further measures. This paper briefly describes the formation and release of secondary pollutants during thermal treatment of ashes, various thermal technologies for ash treatment and the need to study the migration of heavy metals during thermal treatment of ash. It summarizes the available literature on the migration of heavy metals and the reduction of heavy metal contamination during thermal treatment of ash.
