Abstract

The coefficient of thermal decay is proposed to study the principle of the thermal decay in the underfloor supply air plenum (USAP) of the underfloor air distribution (UFAD) system. The ratio of the heat transfer from the room to the USAP can be derived from the coefficient of thermal decay, and the thermal decay in the USAP is mainly caused by the heat transfer from the room to the USAP. The distribution of the temperatures in the USAP is analyzed by the experiments, and the main influence factors are discussed with the box-plots. Then the effects of the supply air temperature, airflows, and type of diffusers on the thermal decay in the USAP are concluded. The results show that the thermal decay in the USAP is reduced with the increase of the supply air temperature and the decrease of the airflows. In addition, the thermal decay in the UFAD system with perforated tiles or grille diffusers is lower than that in the UFAD system with swirl diffusers, but the changes of coefficient of thermal decay are similar for the systems.
